Peas on Earth

Making the most of the season`s blessings . Fresh, greeny green peas, cherry tomatoes, baby courgettes, new potatoes, salad leaves and lots of herbs... strawberry and redcurrant glory.  Early June that is :)

" Peas must be grown in fertile, well-drained soil. Any waterlogging and the seeds will rot. Peas can be grown as `earlies, second earlies and main crop. From sowing to picking, `first earlies` take 12 weeks, second earlies 13-14 weeks and main crop 14-16 weeks. You can also plant `late earlies` in early July for picking in early October if you live in the warmer south."  A Greener life by Clarissa Dickson Wright and Johnny Scott

Red and green- very Italian indeed

In small spaces tomatoes are best grown in 22 cm pots or in stone circles with a polythene base.

Snap off any side-shoots that develop or cut off with a sharp knife. When the plants are 120-150cm tall, cut away the lower leaves with a sharp knife to allow light into the bottom of the plants and to guard against the risk of fungal disease.
